Lead Through Uncertainty with Adaptability

The world is changing quickly and disruptions to work and business are significant. During uncertainty, leaders must adapt to support workers, while confronting their own doubts, fears, and concerns. As you face uncertainty, whether in your workplace, industry, or world at large, respond to it with empathy, agility, and strategy.

Brace for Being Overwhelmed

Sixty-eight percent of employees are seeking more support than ever, and 64% of professionals are overwhelmed by the pace of change at work, according to research from LinkedIn. Change management strategies that include communication, hearing employees’ concerns, and reassurance for those embracing change and those struggling to adapt may provide the support employees need.

However, leaders aren’t immune to the fast pace of change. Brace yourself for feeling overwhelmed while managing overwhelmed employees. Ensure your own support systems exist—within your organization and personally—so you have the support you need as you continue to lead.

Agility and Adaptability Are Key

Uncertainty means there’s not a clear path forward. Remain agile by trying new tactics, moving quickly while maintaining trust, and holding space for failure. Adapt plans and processes as needed and be aware of the moving goal post. It may be unavoidable, but recognize the individuals impacted by acknowledging their contributions and defining the next step.

Learn How You Can Help

You can’t solve everyone’s problems, but there are actions you can take to make work a little easier during uncertainty. Not everyone wants to share their fears with their boss, but if you’re willing and able, make yourself available to hear employees’ concerns and act where you can. Stay interviews create an avenue for feedback and honesty. 

Lean into resources provided by your organization and make your employees aware of the tools available to them. Work with HR to provide education on existing resources, or to obtain the resources employees need most during uncertainty.

Keep Moving Forward

One thing is certain, change will continue. Uncertainty can’t be predicted and may be unexpected, but the strategies to adapt remain the same. Prioritize the most important goals and maintain communication, support, and flexibility to support your employees through uncertainty as a team.
